Revatio belongs to the class of medicines called hypertension phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. It is prescribed for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, which main symptoms are trouble breathing, increased fatigability, irregular heartbeat, and chest pain. Revatio works by relaxing blood vessels, thus making blood and oxygen flow more freely. Its active ingredient is sildenafil citrate, the same as that of Viagra. It has been proven in studies that Revatio decreases pressure in the pulmonary artery and increases the distance people can walk.

Revatio should be taken 3 times a day, each day in the same time, with or without food. There are some medications Revatio should never be taken with. These are nitrate drugs (e.g., nitroglycerin), antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole and itraconazole), and ritonavir. Revatio can produce side effects, though they are usually not serious enough to make patients stop taking the medicine. Alcohol should be avoided, as it can increase side effects.
